If you attended WOHVA’s Annual OHV Workshops and Membership Meetings this past April you’ll recall that Cameron Bump, Leader for the WI DNR ROA Project was one of our keynote speakers.
I recently reached out to Cameron to get an update on the response from the 4WD community regarding this project. I asked for information I can share with our members. I also asked him to compare 4WD responses to other user groups to see how we match up. His response is below.
“I think that we have received a fair number of responses from the 4WD community, typically less than 100 or so respondents per region from what I can pull from the data. Other activities like walking or biking have responses in the 700-800 range.
The ROA simply makes a recommendation on properties that might have potential for a particular use. The next steps for any changes to be enacted would be the master planning process. That is where alternatives for property-specific changes on open roads and other recreational uses are considered by the public and then approved or adjusted by the Natural Resources Board.”
There is an opportunity to appear in person to an open house meeting in Appleton. Leaders from WOHVA, W4WDA & Wrangle Riders will be attending. This is a great chance for us to make our voices heard.
The DNR is hosting an open house meeting for the Lake Winnebago Waters area (Northern Kettle Moraine Possible Trails) at Fox Valley Technical College on November 1st. Fox Valley Technical College – Bordini Center, 5 Systems Dr, Appleton, WI 54914
It is imperative that we improve our response numbers if we have a chance to gain 4WD access to state lands.

The Department of Natural Resources will present a master plan amendment for the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest to the Natural Resources Board at their October 25, 2017 meeting in Madison. The purpose of this proposed amendment is to address evolving needs and opportunities to the recreation experiences provided at the property. The amendment was revised based on public comments received during the August 17 to September 17 input period.
The more notable proposed changes to the master plan include:
The amendment does not propose any changes to the land management classifications of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest.
The Wisconsin Off-Highway Vehicle Association’s 10th Annual Great Northern Trail Ride was a resounding success. This year’s event was held at a new venue, Apple Valley Farms Off-Road Park near New Auburn, WI. WOHVA partnered with RPM4X4.com to host this truly awesome event exclusively for the GNTR.
The event details included a Friday check in with an opportunity for participants to mingle. Camping on site was included in the registration fee. There is 50 acres of rolling hills and secluded nooks to choose your perfect campsite. Saturday trail rides were provided by WOHVA’s professionally trained and experienced trail guides. This was followed by a pig roast dinner and raffle prizes from our generous sponsors. The evening was concluded with a camp fire. Have you ever been to a camp fire where the wood is loaded and reloaded several times with a skidder? Let’s just say it was HUGE! Sunday many of the participants went out with WOHVA trail guides for an impromptu trail ride.
WOHVA would like to thank Apple Valley Farms Off-Road Park for their warm hospitality in allowing WOHVA to host this event. These guys are awesome!
WOHVA also throws out a huge thank you to our sponsors, Del City (delcity.net) Tom Woods Custom Drive Shafts (4XSHAFT.com) Drive Train Specialists (drivespecialists.com) Warn (warn.com) and Roadside Four Wheelers.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the 3rd weekend of Aug for next year’s event. This is sure to be bigger and better than ever!
WOHVA invites you to attend 17th Annual Kewaskum Classic Car Show and Benefit on September 17th 2017 in Downton Kewaskum. WOHVA has been participating in this event for nearly 10 years. This has proven to be an awesome and fun event.
Once again we are trying to "Fill the Hill". We need this to be the biggest yet. In discussion with the organizer it was mentioned that if we have a GREAT turnout, next years flyer will feature one of our rigs. If you've thought about attending in the past but passed, now is the time. Lets rally the troops and have the biggest turnout ever! Need not be a WOHVA member to attend just own a 4WD vehicle. Bring a friend or neighbor if they have a rig. Stocker, Show quality or trail proven doesn't matter. In fact trail proven gets just as much if not more attention. Overland type rigs would be a great addition!
This show is getting know for having more than the "typical" same cars at every show. Lets show what we got!
There are shops, drinking and food establishments and the city park in walking distance, the Kettle Moraine State Forest has hiking trails just 2 miles from town.
Hope to see you there!
The WI DNR has open hearings scheduled for the public to provide input on the Recreational Opportunities Analysis project. If you are interested in providing your thoughts and experiences pertaining to outdoor recreation, please consider attending the open houses and completing the online feedback opportunities below. The comment period for these two regions will run through September 8th at midnight.
With little to no 4WD trails in Wisconsin, it's imperative we attend these meetings and provide feedback. WOHVA has been attending and commenting on this project since it's inception, including having the project coordinator, Cameron Bump as a presenter at our OHV Workshop and Membership Meetings back in April.
