Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest delays opening of campgrounds, recreational trails
Release Date: Apr 24, 2013
Rhinelander,Wis., April 23, 2013 – Much of the 1.5 million acres of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has experienced more snow fall than normal. It is anticipated that the opening of the forest’s 53 developed campgrounds will be delayed due to these conditions.
Visitors are encouraged to check the web site or call the district offices to check on opening dates. We recognize this is an issue for visitors and work will be done to get the campgrounds open as soon as possible.
Recreational trails across the CNNF will also be opening later than usual. All trails will be closed due to the snow pack and wet conditions until approximately May 17. Trails on the Lakewood-Laona District will open on May 10 if conditions allow.
Conditions for both campgrounds and trails will be assessed on a regular basis. If there are changes allowing for earlier openings we will notify the public right away.
“We ask for the public’s understanding with this delay. During a normal spring we get all the campgrounds open in time for the opening of fishing season, unfortunately Mother Nature is just not going along with that plan this year,” said Forest Supervisor Paul Strong. “We know this can make it hard for visitors to plan ahead and we will keep people up to date on changing conditions.”
